Gerald Friedman

M.D., Ph.D. Emeritus Trustee, Clinical Professor of Medicine, Mount Sinai School of Medicine

Dr. Gerald “Jeff” Friedman has been a member of the Board since April, 1998. He serves as Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine Mount Sinai in Manhattan, NY specializing in Gastroenterology, Nutrition, and Pharmacology. He is a graduate of Rutgers College of Pharmacy, received his Ph.D. in pharmacology at Syracuse University and his MD from The University of Buffalo, and later, a Masters Degree from the Institute of Clinical  Nutrition at Columbia University.

He taught physiology and pharmacology at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine and later, on an NIH Grant, was program coordinator of the GI Fellows. His bench research and clinical trials included experimental obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, GI motility disorders, and probiotics. He is the lead editor in the text book “GI Pharmacology and Therapeutics”, and the editor of three editions of GI Clinics of North America on Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Probiotics and Prebiotics. In addition to contributed chapters to other professional texts, he has lectured nationally and internationally, and served as a consultant to several pharmaceutical companies. After leaving private practice he taught nutrition to medical students at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
